After receiving filler, it’s not unusual to experience temporary swelling, bruising, or surface irregularities.
However, some patients have also noted their lips feel dry afterwards.
While several plastic surgeons and dermatologists admitted that this wasn’t a common complaint, others offered possible explanations for post-injection dryness of the lips.
Why Receiving Filler Usually Makes Lips More Hydrated
Most lip fillers like Juvederm Vollure, Juvederm Volbella XC, and Restylane are made of hyaluronic acid.
This substance naturally occurs in the body and easily attracts water, which makes it an excellent hydrating and plumping agent.
Therefore, most dermatologists and plastic surgeons reason that lips should feel moister after injections, rather than dry.
Possible Reasons Your Lips May Feel Dry After Filler
Some aesthetic experts suggest that post-procedure swelling is a reason lips may feel dry after filler.
More specifically, filler can cause the lips to expand and experience an inflammatory reaction. In response, the top layer of skin on the lips can become dry and peel.
Additionally, another dermatologist offered that filler could reposition parts of the lips and make them more prone to dryness.
Here’s why: Pre-filler, the center of the lip is often considered internal and is surrounded by moisture within the mouth.
After an injection, filler can plump this part of the lip outward, so that it’s now in an external position. This change also means that the skin is now exposed to air, which can make it dryer.
Treatment for Dry Lips Post-Injection
Dermatologists recommend that patients who experience dry lips after filler follow these instructions.
First, apply a lip balm with vitamin E or shea butter, and then top it with an ointment like Vaseline or Aquaphor.
This combination locks in moisture and also prevents lip licking, which can worsen dryness.
