Laser Hair Removal FAQ

01

How Do I Prepare For Treatment?

Treatment will take place at the Laser of Arlington Clinic. For about six weeks prior to treatment, you should avoid plucking, electrolysis or waxing. On the day of your treatment, skin should be clean-shaven and thoroughly cleansed of any makeup, creams, oils, topical anesthetics or self-tanning products. Apply sunblock (SPF 30 or above) before your treatment. Do not expose the treatment area to sunlight or tanning booth light for 7-14 days prior to or 7-14 days immediately after treatment. If you have a history of herpes simplex virus, a prophylactic antiviral therapy may be prescribed.

02

What Can I Expect During Treatment?

Treatment will take place at the Laser of Arlington Clinic. You will wear safety eyewear to protect your eyes from the laser light. One of our certified laser technicians will guide the laser to the treatment areas with a small handpiece. A short pulse of cooling spray will precede each laser pulse. Treatment could take as little as few minutes to as long as an hour and a half, depending on the area and condition being treated. A cool compress or gel pack may be applied for additional comfort after your treatment. Any redness or swelling should resolve in a few hours.

03

How Long Does It Take?

A treatment can take as little as a few minutes to as long as an hour and a half, depending on the treatment area and the condition being treated. Both legs can often be treated in as few as 30 minutes, as can an average-sized man’s back.

04

What Is The Post-Treatment Care?

After your laser treatment, prevent sun exposure by applying sunblock (SPF 30 or above). In the first few days after treatment, don’t scrub or rinse the treated areas with abrasive skin cleansers. Side effects may include redness, swelling, hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, blistering and purpura (laser bruise) in the treated area—these usually do not last more than a few days.

05

Is Laser Hair Removal Safe for Darker Skin Tones?

Yes! Other laser hair removal treatments don’t cater to all skin types, but there’s a Gentle Hair Removal treatment that’s right for you, no matter what your skin tone.

Does Laser Hair Removal Hurt?

Some patients may feel slight discomfort, which has been compared to snapping a rubber band against the skin. This discomfort resolves quickly and is minimized by Candela’s patented Dynamic Cooling Device™ (DCD™).

06

07

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

Multiple treatments are required to achieve the full hair removal effect. That’s because hair grows in three stages. The hairs on your body are not always at the same stage, so you’ll need to undergo a few treatments, an average of six weeks apart, to catch them all in the growth stage.

08

What Precautions Should I Take?

After your laser treatment, prevent sun exposure by applying sunblock (SPF 30 or above). In the first few days after treatment, don’t scrub or rinse the treated areas with abrasive skin cleansers.

09

Are There Any Side Effects or Risks?

Permanent side effects are rare and may include redness, swelling, hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, blistering and purpura (laser bruise) in the treated area—these usually do not last more than a few days.

Laser Tattoo Removal FAQ

01

What Does The Alex TriVantage Treatment Feel Like?

The Alex TriVantage is less painful than other treatment options. The degree of discomfort varies with each person, depending on his or her pain threshold. Most patients do not require pain management. In some cases, a light topical anesthetic can be used.

02

What Precautions Should I Take Throughout This Process?

Immediately following treatment, a cold compress may be applied to soothe the area. A topical antibiotic ointment is also recommended. In the first few days, take care to avoid scrubbing the area or using abrasive skin cleansers. A non-sticky dressing may help prevent abrasion. A sunblock is also recommended.

03

How Many Alex TriVantage Treatments Will I Need?

The effectiveness of the laser depends on the age, location, colors, depth and type of tattoo. Smaller tattoos will require fewer laser pulses, while larger ones will require more. All tattoos will require multiple treatments for optimal results.

04

What If My Tattoo Was Previously Treated By Another Modality?

Patients with previously treated tattoos may be candidates for the Candela systems. Tattoos that have not been effectively removed by other treatments may respond well to the Alex TriVantage laser, providing prior treatment did not cause excessive scarring or skin damage.

05

Is Tattoo Removal Safe And Are There Side Effects?

Alex TriVantage treatments selectively treat the tattoo while leaving the surrounding skin undamaged, making it safer than non-laser options. After treatment, patients will experience temporary discoloration or reddening of the skin around the treatment site. Some patients may also experience a temporary lightening or darkening of the skin for a few months following treatment. The skin will typically resolve to normal pigmentation color. It is important to follow the post-treatment care instructions given at your session.
