What Is Juvederm?

Juvederm is an FDA-approved dermal filler designed to restore volume, correct wrinkles and lines, and counteract signs of aging. It is manufactured by Allergan, the same company that’s responsible for Botox, and includes a range of injectable products.

Juvederm Filler Products

Each Juvederm filler is created to target and address specific cosmetic concerns and areas of the face.

Juvederm XC and Juvederm Vollure are excellent options for smoothing wrinkles and lines around the nose and mouth.

Juvederm Voluma XC is recommended for cheek augmentation and improved facial contours.

Juvederm Ultra XC and Juvederm Volbella are indicated for lip enhancement. While Ultra XC is usually ideal for added fullness and definition, Volbella XC provides subtle augmentation and smooths perioral lines.

How Does Juvederm Work?

The main ingredient in Juvederm is hyaluronic acid – a naturally-occurring substance found in skin and joints. Hyaluronic acid is extremely hydrophilic and can hold up to 1000 times its weight in water.

Accordingly, when Juvederm’s hyaluronic acid gel is injected under the skin, it instantly attracts water and produces volumizing and hydrating effects. These benefits not only plump tissue, they can also lift skin and restore natural contours.

What Can Patients Expect During Treatment?

Depending on the individual and number of treatment areas, a Juvederm treatment typically takes 15-60 minutes. It is conducted in an office setting and avoids incisions, cutting, anesthesia, scarring, or downtime. For these reasons, Juvederm filler is an ideal option for women and men who want to rejuvenate their faces, but wish to avoid surgery and a lengthy recovery.

During the procedure, the marked areas are skillfully injected with a very fine needle. The injector will carefully assess product placement throughout the treatment and massage the area to limit swelling and ensure optimal outcomes.

Following Juvederm injections, patients are free to return to work and resume all normal activities right away.

How Quickly Does Juvederm Work?

One of the key benefits of Juvederm is that it produces instant results. Patients will be pleased to note that the treated area immediately appears fuller, with improved contours and shape. Lines will also look softer for more refreshed and youthful skin.

How Long Do Juvederm Results Last?

Juvederm offers temporary volume restoration, as the hyaluronic acid gel is gradually broken down by the body.

With that being said, results can last anywhere from six–to–18 months. Longevity depends on the patient’s metabolic rate, product used, treatment area, and injector skill and technique.

What Are Juvederm Risks and Side Effects?

Juvederm first received FDA-approval in 2006 and has an excellent safety profile. Results can even be partially or fully reversed using an enzyme called hyaluronidase.

However, there are some possible side effects and risks that patients should be informed of prior to treatment.

These may include:

  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Tenderness
  • Redness
  • Surface irregularities
  • Minor pain
  • Itching

These effects are usually mild and temporary and resolve on their own in two-to-four weeks.

But in the hands of an unqualified or inexperienced injector, Juvederm can have some serious complications. This is especially true if the product is injected into an artery, which can result in vascular compromise and tissue necrosis.

For these reasons, you should always seek a certified injector who practices in a medical setting or aesthetic center.

Botox is often the first treatment that comes to mind for anyone who’s looking to refresh their appearance and counteract signs of aging. This is not surprising considering that Botox is the No. 1 cosmetic treatment in the world.

The neurotoxin is also able to relieve chronic migraines, excessive sweating, teeth grinding, and a host of other health conditions.

Whether you are seeking Botox for aesthetic or therapeutic reasons, it’s important to be well-prepared for the procedure and know what to expect.

Continue reading to learn all about Botox, including how it works, treatment indications, results, and possible side effects.

What Is Botox?

Botox is an FDA-approved neurotoxin treatment that’s derived from Clostridium botulinum bacterium. When injected into muscles and glands, it produces a temporary paralytic effect, for a variety of cosmetic and therapeutic benefits.

Best-known for its ability to relax facial wrinkles and lines, Botox is consistently rated the No. 1 cosmetic treatment worldwide, with approximately six million treatments performed each year.

How Does Botox Work?

As a neuromodulator, Botox blocks the release of acetylcholine to prevent communication between nerves and muscles. In doing so, it inhibits contraction of targeted muscles and prevents them from wrinkling skin above. This relaxes wrinkles and lines to smooth skin and refresh one’s appearance.

The same mechanism of action can also be applied to alleviate a number of muscular disorders and associated symptoms.

What Concerns Can Botox Treat?

Neurotoxins like Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeuveau are designed to reduce moderate to severe wrinkles and combat signs of aging. Accordingly, Botox cosmetic is often used to treat:

  • Horizontal forehead lines
  • Vertical frown lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Bunny lines
  • Downturned corners of the mouth
  • Non-Surgical eye lift
  • Gummy smile
  • Platysmal banding

At the same time, Botox has over 20 medical uses, including:

  • Chronic migraines
  • Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)
  • Blepharospasm
  • Neck and shoulder spasms
  • Strabismus (crossed eyes)
  • Overactive bladder
  • Teeth grinding and jaw clenching

How Is Botox Performed?

Botox is a noninvasive in-office treatment that should be performed by a qualified and experienced injector. Injections usually take 15-30 minutes, and most patients find the process to be quick and virtually painless.

During the procedure, individuals are asked to activate the targeted muscles by making a facial expression. Based on muscle movement and strength, the injector strategically administers Botox as a series of small injections. An ultra-fine needle is used to limit discomfort, resulting in a slight pricking sensation.

Post-treatment, patients are free to go about their day as they normally would, without any downtime.

How Long Does It Take to See Results?

In most cases, Botox results become visible in three-to-five days. Patients will be pleased to note the gradual softening of wrinkles and lines and that they look like refreshed and well-rested versions of themselves.

In order to achieve natural-looking results such as these, be sure to seek a skilled and experienced provider with an artistic eye.

How Long Does Botox Last?

While Botox provides consistent and predictable outcomes, its results are temporary.

Depending on the area and reason for treatment, effects usually last four-to-six months. After this time, patients will need to undergo additional injections in order to maintain Botox benefits.

It’s also worth noting that Botox can train muscles away from undesirable movements. This often means that, over time, patients will need fewer treatments to preserve Botox effects.

What Are Possible Botox Side Effects?

Botox was first approved by the FDA for cosmetic use in 2002 and has a proven track record as a safe and effective treatment. With that being said, it is not 100 percent risk-free, and patients should be aware of any and all possible risks and side effects.

Botox side effects are usually mild and temporary and may include redness and pain at the injection site.

More serious complications can include:

  • Headache
  • Numbness
  • Temporary unwanted weakness/paralysis of nearby muscles.
  • Temporary drooping of upper lid or brow
  • Hives
  • Rashes
  • Wheezing
  • Swelling
  • Bleeding
  • Blurred vision
  • Decreased eyesight
  • Dry mouth
  • Fatigue
